Better Blogging: Cure Writer's Block With These 5 Tips

Writer’s block happens to the best of us. For home builders who frequently blog to promote their services and attract potential clients, this frozen state can be very frustrating. We understand your dilemma and we’re here to help. So, take a deep breath, pour a cup of coffee, and read on for five easy ways to cure your writer’s block:

1. Let Go of Perfection

Nothing triggers a bad case of writer’s block faster than trying to create the perfect blog post. We’ll let you in on a little secret: Even the savviest of writers don’t produce perfect content, because in the writing world, perfection doesn’t exist. By letting go of the perfect blog post illusion, words and ideas will begin to flow, and your writer’s block will melt away.

2. Freewrite

If you have a general idea of what you want to blog about, but are unsure of how to shape it into a post, open up a document, and just write. Freewriting will allow you to get your thoughts from your brain to where you can see them. After about 10 minutes, read over your writing and start to organize it, grouping similar statements into categories. You should be able to notice a pattern, which will make the direction of your blog post more clear.

3. Begin at the End

Don’t be afraid to mix things up and write out of order. Start with a title. Write the conclusion first, the second and fourth bullet point, the first, and then the introduction. Warming up with the easiest sections of your new blog post will make writing the more difficult sections less challenging.

4. Change Your Perspective

You can break through writer’s block by changing your perspective in one of two ways: !) freshen up your environment or 2) blog from a different point of view. Write from a local coffee shop, go for a walk outside, or make yourself a sandwich. Freshening up your environment can spark creativity and punch through a blank computer screen. If that doesn’t work, think about altering the voice (or point of view) of your post. Write from your spouse’s perspective, your child’s perspective, even your dog’s perspective. That may sound silly, but changing the way you approach your material can help you think differently about what you’re writing and give you a starting point.

5. Read for Inspiration

“I need to update my blog, but I have no idea what to write about.” Does this sound familiar? Browse the web and see what other people (prospective clients, published magazines, even your competitors) are saying about home building and remodeling. Blog an answer to a frequently asked question, write a unique spin-off, or counter a claim.
